Overview: going back to work

Looking for work

There is a range of information sources and supports to help you look for work.

The Local Employment Service (LES) or Job Club can help you with writing CVs and job applications and provide training in interview skills. You can find out more about these supports from FÁS which can provide you with help and support when you are looking for work and applying for jobs. FÁS employment services were transferred to the Department of Social Protection in January 2012.

Starting a new job

If you are starting work you must have a Personal Public Service Number. You should also check your contract of employment and that your tax and social insurance (PRSI) deductions are correct when you start a new job.

You can get an additional tax allowance under the Revenue Job Assist scheme if you have been unemployed for 12 months or more and are now returning to work. The job you are taking up must be for a minimum of 30 hours a week and be capable of lasting at least 12 months.

If your income from work is below a certain level and you are supporting at least one child you may get Family Income Supplement (FIS). FIS is a tax-free weekly payment. You must be working 19 or more hours per week (or 38 or more hours per fortnight). You can combine your weekly hours worked with your spouse's, civil partner's or cohabitant's to meet this condition. The job must last at least 3 months

Starting a business

If you are carrying on your own business it means you are self-employed rather than working for an employer. You can set up your business as a sole trader, partnership or limited company. The type of structure you choose depends on the kind of business you are carrying on. There are a number of things to take into consideration, such as, tax, insurance and legal structures when you are starting a business.

If you have spent some time unemployed and you want to set up your own business you may qualify for a Back to Work Enterprise Allowance.
